CAMRA in Glasgow

Glasgow guide illustrating top ten pubs in different styles of drinking (and dining) eg Style pubs or Live Music pubs.

Timeout listing of best pubs - controversial

A good proportion of the pubs have real ale but many do not. The west coast still has a bit of a lager flavour - occasionally only lager. Real ale is not limited to trendy style pubs, and not even in many of these.

Glasgow does not have the tourist grouping of pubs as found in Edinburgh - they are mainly aimed at Glasgow folk.

Practically every pub offers food at lunch or all day

Bier Halle

Bier Halle is found in a doorway and down a flight of stairs to a narrow dark room. The servery is in the far left corner. Along the right wall are long high benches with stool seating. Along from the servery and running back past the stairs and to the back of the room are standard sized tables and stools.

  • Pale Ale: Lagunitas Pale Ale; Bier Halle Pale Ale

  • Lager: Madri ; Broklyn; Amstel; Fustenberg; Warsteiner; Birra Moretti ; Tiger; Weihenstephan; Blue Moon; Bier Halle Lager ; Staroperamen;

  • Guinness

 The Lab

The Lab (Navan Taverns) is a small bar up an alley leading to Princes’ Square. There is outside seating to the left of the small building that is The Lab. Inside the righthand side has the tall wooden servery, with lots of stools, and kitchen at the far end. Along the left-hand wall are banquette seating and dining style tables. The pub is this so this leaves only a little space between the bar stools and those sitting down. Pictures of scientists are on the wall and on a shelf behind the bar are a test tube, flask and beaker, and an old oscilloscope give some explanation of the name.

  • Bitter: Caledonia Best;  Gladeye (Drygate)

  • Lager: Tennent’s;  Stella;  Budweisser;  Estrella;  Menabrea;  Erdinger

Wonderbar (was Bread and Butter)

Wunderbar is in the former Bread and Butter premises. This was up an unattractive narrow alley, called McCormack Lane, with a covered dark narrow seating area with umbrellas outside it and there is also an entrance from back of Prices Square along narrow lanes. Wunderbar does not use the unattractive alley; this now a back door. Wunderbar encourages the use of the other entrance which is up the next alley where The Lab is found and round to the left. Inside is a large square room with servery along the far wall The right side wall is glass through which is an outside area; door at the right of the servery. Cocktails and food. Inside the room has lots of TVs and long wooden tables, some sofas and some four-seater booths. Exposed wiring, vents and piping on ceiling give an industrial look.
