GLASGOW: GALLOWGATE
At the far end of Argyll St is The Trongate leading to The Tollbooth and the left street of two leading off though almost straight-ahead is The Gallowgate,
Following the left-hand fork and soon find the Chrystal Bell and opposite here under the railway bridge is MacKinnon's. Continue walking up the Gallowgate on the right hand side. Across the road you will come to The Saracen Head, a famous Glasgow bar which is now closed. A little further on is 226 Gallowgate. Continuing on across the road you will see The Gate, Bar 67, Van Winkle and The Hoops (now closed). Opening times for the first three vary and don’t match google maps but late week afternoon crawls did not find then open.
Continue up and reach Hielan Jessie at the crossroads. Five minutes along the road from here are The Wee Man’s Bar and The Drover Bar. Return back down The Gallowgate and turn left at the next open junction and along on the left, set back, is the hard to miss St Luke’s and The Winged Ox. Continue down Bain St and turn next right into Moncur St. Along on the corner, entrance round the corner on Kent St, is Traders Tavern.
Go down Kent St, continuing your journey away from The Gallowgate. You could look to the right along Stevenson St and maybe The Squirrel Bar will be open. If not continue down Kent St and turn right onto London Rd. Along here on the right is The Burnt Barns, Lynchs Bar (again opening times vary) further along on the next corner is The Braemar. Continue along London Rd (walking back to Tollbooth area) and at the final corner there is The Tollbooth Bar.
A place this size is bound to have its own guides to illustrate the vast quantity, quality and styles of pubs.
Glasgow guide illustrating top ten pubs in different styles of drinking (and dining) eg Style pubs or Live Music pubs.
Timeout listing of best pubs - controversial
A good proportion of the pubs have real ale but many do not. The west coast still has a bit of a lager flavour - occasionally only lager. Real ale is not limited to trendy style pubs, and not even in many of these.
Glasgow does not have the tourist grouping of pubs as found in Edinburgh - they are mainly aimed at Glasgow folk.
Practically every pub offers food at lunch or all day
The Chrystal Bell & Co
The Chrystal Bell & Co is a one roomed corner pub with entrances from both sides. From the 31 Gallow gate entrance the bar comes out from the far wall in a small horseshoe shape. There are booths down the left-hand wall and in the far-right hand corner is seating and the other entrance. Along the windows overlooking the Gallowgate is a raised seating area, up a couple of steps, with padded banquette seating and tables. This makes a lounge area apart from the main bar area in front of the servery counter. All floors are wooden and there is a high ceiling with cornicing. There are TVs on the wall and stools at counter. An “old man’s pub”, with prices reflecting that, that has been restyled with new furnishing but still has the old flavour. Mackinnon’s
Mackinnon’s is a two roomed corner pub, underneath a railway bridge, with entrances from both sides. The entrance on the main street (The Gallowgate) takes you to a counter straight in front of you. To the right of the door is a small area for playing pool. The bar counter curves around to the left with a narrow seating area, also curving, opposite it. When the curve straightens there is the other entrance and the next room. This is a longer, but still curving room, with blue banquette seating along the left-hand wall. This room is served from the end of the counter.
Bright, cheerful and cheap prices.

226 Gallowgate
226 Gallowgate has outside seating either side of door. The servery is on the wall opposite door and along to right.
To the right of the door there are tall tables along right side windows and some small round tables in centre floor area some with chairs and some small stools and leaving plenty of standing space around the silvery high counter.
Turning left from the door are rectangular tables along window side and again small round tables with chairs filling the centre of the room. The chairs are reminiscent of schools in the 60s.
Although servery and seating area are nice with dark wood furniture and plenty of light from the windows above head level the look is distressed ceiling and flaky paint. Behind the servery the distress is taken to a new level with bricks supporting concrete stairs going up behind the back wall and tiles from the old stair walls along the side.
There is a limited covered outdoor area entered from the far left corner.
Heavy/bitter/pale ale: Brooklyn pale ale

The brown wood counter has match strikers embedded below and a spittoon the length of the counter. Near either end of the counter is a pillar supporting the ceiling. The right side of the counter goes round the corner for a little bit.

PLACES TO VISIT WITH PUBTRAILS
The towns and villages highlighted on this web site have a wide variety of pubs and beers in them. All of the places are great to visit, whether for a day or longer, and most have tourist attractions for all of the family.
There is a large variety of pubs throughout the different towns shown below. Some you may wish never to visit again but even discovering these can be interesting. There are pubs that you would not take your wife into. While some you could not take your girlfriend into. A few you would not take either into. However, most of the pubs are very pleasant.

The Drovers
The Drover is a corner pub with the narrow front on the main road and the longer side running down the side street. Both the side door (lounge) and the front door now take you into the same room. The door on main road narrow front enters into a wooden floored longish room with the servery taking up middle of wall on the right. Behind the counter is a large attractive wooden gantry. There is some seating up a step to the right of the door and then the counter begins. To the left of the door and along the left wall is banquette seating which is almost booth like as pillars cut off every two seats. The seats are served by modern wooden square tables and chairs. Along the counter are cold metal stools. The lounge door from down long side opens into the same room but is closer to the rear sitting room now equipped with a pool table.

St Luke’s and the Winged Ox
St Lukes and the Winged Ox is an award winning bar/restaurant set it what would have been the church hall of St Luke’s. The main church is now an events venue.
In through the side door via a corridor of event posters then to a large rectangular room with high ceiling and the servery at the far end.
There are booths down either side and in the centre of the room is a variety of seating; tall tables opposite the counter, an armchair area after this then a couple of rows of rectangular dining tables. There is a mixture of wood and industrial furnishing. The tables and floor are wooden with the floor being particularly distressed while the tables are supported by scaffolding like legs. The ceiling has metal racks supporting lights and fairy lights, and the servery has piping supporting some taps and other taps on the back tiled wall. However, the mixture works well together.
Outside seating entrance at top right.

Going in the left side bar door the widest space is in the point of the bar to the right of the entrance. Against the wall to the left is the servery. There is not much room between the counter and the wall for customers - enough room for a stool and a walk past up to the small square lounge.
