Glasgow pubs St George’s cross subway to Kelvinbridge
GLASGOW: Great Western Road
Two trails available for the price of one. There is a choice after the first five pubs. - (1) get subway from Kelvin bridge via five pubs or (2) return to St George’s subway via six.
Take the subway from anywhere and alight at St George’s Cross station. Turn right out of the entrance and walk down to the junction and cross over what is Great Western Road. The road running off of Great Western Rd, is Maryhill Rd. Cross to the right hand side and walk up and around this building and walk down Clarendon Pl to The Castle Vaults across the road. Continue down and around to the right back towards the subway and onto Great Western Rd.
Past the subway and on the left is The Hug and Pint, quickly followed by The Scallion (was Munro’s) and across the street is Wintersgills. Walking up another block there is The Machair. A little further on there is a gap to the right which has a line of trees. Turn right here onto Lansdowne Crescent (only connected to Great Western Rd by pavements). Along this road is a basement bar called The Lansdowne. Shift back to Great Western Rd and the next church up is Webster’s. From here cross over the road and the bridge (which looks over Kelvin Bridge subway).
(1) On the far corner, just over the bridge is Inn Deep. From here continue up Great Western Rd and walk up to the second corner where there is the large Cooper’s, continuing up the road is The Belle. Cross over and and opposite Cooper’s is Kitty O’Shea’s and The French Horn (was The Bakehouse). Cross back over and walk down the side of Cooper’s until reaching Bank Street Bar Kitchen. Walk down to the lights and turn left along Gibson Street and across at the next corner is The Left Bank and then down and across on the left Stravaigin. Continue down Gibson St and across the bridge and turn left. Walk along to the next corner and The Doublet. Return to centre from Kelvinbridge subway which is down the side of The Doublet and round the corner.
(2) Alternatively, cross from Websters to the underground and go down the stairs and follow the road around the bend and up the side of the Doublet. Ignore The Doublet as it is on the first fork of the trail (or on on leaving The Doublet), instead of getting the subway from Kelvinbridge you may walk back to St Georges subway via six more bars.
Across the roundabout from The Doublet is Woodlands Rd. Up here on the right is The Old Schoolhouse then across the road and up past the roundabout is DRAM!. Not far up is FF West End (formerly West) and on the next corner is The Arlington. Cross over the road and continue down until the Lyndoch St corner where there is basement bar called The Drake. Then crossing back over proceed to the lights and turning left into St George’s Rd where at the next corner there is Camerons (formerly The Carnarvon).
A place this size is bound to have its own guides to illustrate the vast quantity, quality and styles of pubs.
Glasgow guide illustrating top ten pubs in different styles of drinking (and dining) eg Style pubs or Live Music pubs.
Timeout listing of best pubs - controversial
A good proportion of the pubs have real ale but many do not. The west coast still has a bit of a lager flavour - occasionally only lager. Real ale is not limited to trendy style pubs, and not even in many of these.
Glasgow does not have the tourist grouping of pubs as found in Edinburgh - they are mainly aimed at Glasgow folk.
Practically every pub offers food at lunch or all day

There is a large variety of pubs throughout the different towns shown below. Some you may wish never to visit again but even discovering these can be interesting. There are pubs that you would not take your wife into. While some you could not take your girlfriend into. A few you would not take either into. However, most of the pubs are very pleasant.

The French Horn
previously The Bakehouse

The French Horn (formerly The Bakehouse) pub and Bistro has a longish bar with seating either side of the central door. To left are tables and chairs, while to the right are dining style tables behind a low partition that is entered further into room. This nicely splits the two sides and prevents entering into a large space. Both sides are well served by windows letting in lots of daylight to the front of the pub. The servery is then along the middle of the left wall and is made of a light wood which is duplicated in the gantry. Opposite the servery are three red banquette seating booths. Beyond this area the bar opens out again with an area of set dining tables. This is a low ceiling bar with low, but not too dark, lighting. Light wood and light green walls and ceiling work well together to give a relaxing vibe. Disabled access, dogs welcome and food available.

Camerons
(was The Carnarvon)

Camerons (was The Carnarvon) is a new take on an old pub. They have kept the ceiling , panelled walls and the two snugs at the back from The Carnarvon but changed the large island bar into a smaller horshoe counter coming out half way up the left side wall and curling round towards the rear of the room. This achieves a large open room between the door and the counter.
Coming in the entrance to the left are some tall tables with banquette seating leading to some booths, while to the right there is banquette seating and tables into the corner and up the right wall to the side door at the top of the counter. behind the banquette seating and on the pillars is the panelling from its previous existance. The wooden counter, with stools, and matching gantry are new and shiny but keep an older design. The smaller than before servery curves around to the rear where there are two snugs with banquette seating.
