YORK

trail 3 - Down Stonegate

York is a walled city in North Yorkshire. The city was founded by the Romans and has been an important part of British history ever since. The city became a major trading and religious centre. Eventually chocolate and railways became the major industries in York, though they have now declined. At present the biggest employers are in service industries.

York is easily reached by road or train and has many attractions for tourists. Cars can easily be parked for a week while attractions, shops, cafes restaurants and bars keep a visitor occupied.

Two rivers run through York, the Ouse and the Foss. This pub trail looks at pubs caught between the river Ouse and the city wall on the more substantial side which includes the Shambles and York Minster.

Trail 3 - Down Stonegate (yellow icons) 7+2 pubs

From the front door of the Minster walk along the right hand side and half way along turn down to the right and cross over High Petergate into Stonegate.

Above your head is a banner proclaiming Ye Olde Starre inn. A shop or two before this on the right is a bottle shop in which is contained The House of the Trembling Madness. This is followed quickly by The Evil Eye lounge and next door to this an alleyway taking you to Ye Olde Starre Inn.

Further down on the left is signpost directing you to Little Stonegate. Kennedys can be reached from a single door just after this on the left or, more obviously by going along Little Stonegate.

(You could detour done Little Stonegate bringing you to Stonegate Yard and opposite it, Bobo Lobo.

Continuing back to Stonegate before the crossroads there is, on the right was The Yorkshire Terrier, but it is now closed) and on the left The Punch Bowl.

Continuing across the crossroads on the right is Harker’s and at the end of the road is Lendal Cellars. Turning left as you exit will bring you to the second The House of the Trembling Madness which rather nicely finishes off the trail as you start and finish at different pubs with the same name.
